10 Signs Of A Great Doctor

So, you have a diagnosis of heart failure. You want to find a great doctor for treating your condition. Here are ten signs to look for.

Signs of a great doctor

Your doctor is very knowledgeable about your condition. Not only that, but he/she is well adept at how to diagnose and treat your condition.

The best doctors not only have knowledge but they also have great bedside manners. They sit at your side and truly try to understand what you are going through. They may even hug you when you need hugs.

The best doctors are willing to go the extra mile to see you. They have staff that knows when you need to be seen. When you are sick, they go out of their way to see that you get in to see them. And, as a bonus, the doctor is willing to go out of his/her way to make sure you are seen. At the very least, the doctor is willing to give you a call to say, “Hey! You need to go to the ER right now!”

You are a busy person. You have many things to accomplish in your life. So, a great doctor is respectful of your time. They respect the opinions you share about your disease. They respect your curiosity about your disease and aim to satisfy that curiosity. They answer any questions you might have.

Great doctors are good teachers. They are patient with you and are good at making complex subjects easy to understand. This is important, as heart failure can be a complex subject. They are also good at explaining the medicines used to treat your heart failure. How do these medicines work? How will they help you? Why is it important to take them as prescribed? A great doctor is great at explaining.

You as the patient know your body best. So, a great doctor listens to what you have to say and respects what you say.

You are a complex heart failure patient. A great doctor is willing to go out of his/her way to learn more about your case. A great doctor might spend a night at the library. All of this is an effort to help you live better despite your diagnosis.

A great doctor knows the limits of his/her knowledge. At this point, he/she is willing to refer you to a specialist who better understands your condition. A good example here is an internal medicine doctor who refers you to a cardiologist. A great doctor is modest and is willing to put the needs of the patient (you) first.

A doctor’s personality is also important. A great doctor will have a personality that compliments yours. If you are laid back and easy-going, you may want a doctor with a similar personality. However, sometimes it’s nice to have someone with an opposite personality. After all, it's been said that opposites attract. For instance, if you are laid back, it may be nice to have a doctor who is direct and forthcoming. So what doctor personality do you like?

In a compassionate way, a great doctor is straight up with you. A great doctor will let you know what your diagnosis is. I think this is important because you want to know where you stand. From there, you and your doctor can work on a path to controlling your disease so you can live long and live well despite your diagnosis.
