How do you prepare for traveling with heart failure?

Traveling with heart failure is something that can be nerve-wracking, but with the proper preparation, it can be easy. Share your best tips for traveling with heart failure below!

  1. I try to look up the nearest hospital close to where our motel room will be, doing this makes me feel somewhat safer...I've gone out of town twice and had an episode with my heart...

    1. Thank you for joining the conversation. That's actually the first thing that I do and what my doctors told me to do when I had the LVAD. The thing with the LVAD is not all hospitals have the facilities or the staff necessary to deal with problems that may arise. It definitely made me feel safer doing so as well. Just being close to a hospital now would ease a lot of my fears. -Olivia

  2. now that makes me a bit nervous as I’ve planned a trip in less than 2 weeks at a secluded mountain cabin. I knew I couldn’t cruise anymore because of all the wonderful food and my lack of that type of self control. We were also considering Europe because my wife has never been but the distance and language barriers would stop me from relaxing hence a more local 200 miles away cabin, fishing, hiking a bit if I can but I never really considered it dangerous, denial maybe?

My symptoms are leg swelling but it appears if I am very careful I can control that. Eat real healthy and I don’t swell. My other symptom is enormous fatigue that hits me like a veil o er the head but at other times I can exercise very vigorously.

Is there something special i should be thinking of other than the hospital location,( thanks for that)😀

    1. Wow that sounds like it's going to be a good time! I would talk to your cardiologist and let them know where you are going and ask if there is anything that you need to do before you go. I would also ensure you have your medications and extra just in case. I am linking a couple of articles about traveling with heart failure.
