Palative care

Internet research led me to believe a person should get palliative care when they have a serious illness.
I was turned down because I'm able to still drive myself to my doctor.
So is this true with all companies or should I check out a different one?

  1. Hi. I would think your doctor should be able to help you determine if you need palliative care -- which is designed to improve the quality of life for people with serious illnesses, regardless of your ability to drive or perform daily tasks. The main focus is on managing symptoms, providing emotional support, and coordinating care. Is this something you have discussed with your doctors? They should be able to help you determine if you need this, and help set you up. What do you think? John. community moderator.

    1. Thank you for the update. And sorry for the late reply, I had to work in the hospital over the long weekend. We actually had a patient in your situation who the doctor recommended palliative care for. And thankfully in the hospital we have a group of care planners who help patients get this all set up. Perhaps it may be a good idea to talk with a different company. Do you have others in your area you could talk with? John. community moderator.

    2. I enjoy hearing from you. Thank you for the encouragement & yes I do have other co"s I can check with. Living in DFW area helps. I'm so glad that everything I need I can now have delivered.

  2. I remember when I was in the hospital after LVAD surgery and my doctors were saying that I needed palliative care so it's really up to your doctor's discretion on whether or not you need it. I'm not sure why they don't because heart failure is considered a terminal illness. made a good suggestion, maybe you can seek other options and opinions. I hope that this situation is resolved. I wish you all the best. -Olivia

    1. Glad to hear you found a company/ person willing to help you -- and that you will be approved soon. Your persistence has paid off. Good work. That is a great idea for a post. As a respiratory therapist, I am not an expert on paliative care -- although it is certainly worth investigating and writing about. It certainly is helpful to those who need it like yourself. Please do keep us updated, as your thoughts here I am sure are helpful to others in your situation. Wishing you all the best. John . community moderator.
