Troptonin test

My brother went to A/E with chest pain and ssshort of breath.
They did a troptonn blood test.it came back borderline. They were going to repeat the test but they changed their mind and allowed him home.
He's still having the pains.
Is this a normal thing to happen.

  1. Hi ,
I'm sorry to hear what your brother is going through.
Unfortunately, we are not medical professionals and cannot give you/him any specific advice based on his condition/test results.
However, certain things can elevate troponin levels including: stress, anxiety, dehydration, kidney disease as well as certain drugs. I cannot speak for his care team, however the rule of thumb is usually take another test 2-3 hours later and compare the two numbers. I'm assuming that your brother's care team felt comfortable enough with his numbers (and other tests) to release him.
That being said, if he is still having chest pains he should reach out to his doctor or be seen again to rule out anything serious. Many things can cause chest pain including reflux, musculoskeletal issues, lung conditions and of course heart issues.
We certainly hope your brother will find some answers (and relief) soon.
All my best, Doreen (Team Member)
